Every October, I Be Black Girl, the first and only reproductive justice organization in Nebraska, is proud to power 2024 Nebraska Black Maternal Health Month, themed “We’re Here, Now What?” The annual month-long initiative aims to address the urgent disparities faced by Black birthing people to improve maternal and infant health outcomes in Nebraska.
Throughout the month, I Be Black Girl will host a series of impactful events designed to engage and educate the community including a baby shower, weekly online learning series and wellness career focused job fair.
“Ensuring positive Black birth outcomes is not just a matter of care—it’s a commitment to justice, dignity, and the thriving of families and communities,” said Ashlei Spivey, Executive Director of I Be Black Girl. “We deserve to not just live through our experiences but thrive.”
Nebraska’s D- grade from the 2023 March of Dimes Report Card reflects systemic challenges contributing to maternal and infant death as well as near death experiences. With Black mothers and people with the capacity for pregnancy facing significantly higher risks, it is imperative the community come together to seek solutions so that Black people not only survive births but thrive in them.
“Nebraska Black Maternal Health Month is a powerful step towards equity, illuminating the urgent need for care and support,” said Spivey. “By prioritizing the health of Black birthing people, we pave the way for a brighter, healthier future for all.”
